How to Play Othello

The object of the game is to have more of your colour discs on the board at the end of the game than your opponent.

For 2 players.

Age 7+.

How to Play

In the travel version, ‘No Lose Pieces’, start by ensuring all the pieces are turned to green as a blank board.

Players choose which colour to play.

The game always starts with the same format of 2 black and 2 white discs placed in a square, colours on the diagonal, in the centre of the board.

Black always moves first and players in turn place discs to make lines of their colour.

Each player then attempts to outflank the other, which means capturing their colour pieces and turning them to your colour. So long as their opponent’s pieces are in a straight line (vertical, horizontal, on the diagonal) you can capture them by sandwiching their line of pieces between 2 of your pieces, one at each end of the row.

When you capture the line your opponent’s discs turn to your colour.

When it is no longer possible for either player to move it is the end of the game. The player who has the majority of their colour on the board is the winner.

There is no defined scoring pattern, players can arrange their own method of scoring! Like most games rules can be adapted to suit the players, age and experience and their aims. All within reason!

Check out our travel Othello game. The pieces turn within the board and cannot be lost.
